Background of the Study
Deforestation, the large-scale removal of trees and forested areas, is a significant environmental concern that can have wide-ranging effects on biodiversity, climate, and the economy. In Gombe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, deforestation has been driven by factors such as agricultural expansion, urbanization, illegal logging, and the increasing demand for firewood. These activities have led to the degradation of forests and the loss of crucial natural resources that support ecotourism activities.
Ecotourism, which focuses on the conservation of natural areas while promoting sustainable tourism practices, relies heavily on the preservation of forests and natural habitats. Gombe State, with its rich biodiversity and protected areas like the Gombe National Park, has significant ecotourism potential. However, deforestation threatens the viability of these ecotourism destinations by reducing biodiversity, altering landscapes, and diminishing the quality of the tourist experience. This study aims to examine the impact of deforestation on the ecotourism potential of Gombe State, investigating how deforestation affects tourism and what strategies can be implemented to mitigate these impacts.
Statement of the Problem
Deforestation in Gombe State has increasingly threatened the state’s ecotourism potential by reducing natural habitats, decreasing biodiversity, and diminishing the attractiveness of tourist destinations. The negative effects of deforestation on ecosystems can result in the loss of key species, the deterioration of natural landscapes, and the degradation of areas with potential for ecotourism development. While there is significant interest in ecotourism in Gombe State, this interest may wane if the state’s natural resources continue to be depleted. This study will investigate the link between deforestation and ecotourism in Gombe State and assess the implications of forest loss for the future of the sector.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the extent of deforestation in Gombe State and its impact on ecotourism potential.
2. To evaluate the effects of deforestation on biodiversity and the attractiveness of ecotourism sites in Gombe State.
3. To propose sustainable strategies for reducing deforestation and enhancing the ecotourism potential of Gombe State.
Research Questions
1. What is the extent of deforestation in Gombe State, and how does it impact ecotourism?
2. How does deforestation affect biodiversity and the quality of ecotourism sites in Gombe State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to mitigate deforestation and promote sustainable ecotourism in Gombe State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Deforestation has a negative impact on the ecotourism potential of Gombe State.
2. The loss of biodiversity due to deforestation reduces the attractiveness of ecotourism destinations in Gombe State.
3. Implementing sustainable forest management practices will enhance the ecotourism potential of Gombe State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the effects of deforestation on ecotourism in Gombe State, particularly in areas such as Gombe National Park and other ecotourism sites. The study will assess the ecological, economic, and tourism-related impacts of deforestation. Limitations include challenges in obtaining accurate data on deforestation rates and potential biases in the perspectives of local stakeholders.
Definitions of Terms
• Deforestation: The process of clearing or destroying forests, typically for agricultural or industrial purposes.
• Ecotourism: A form of tourism that aims to conserve natural environments while providing sustainable economic opportunities for local communities.
• Biodiversity: The variety of life forms in a given habitat or ecosystem, which contributes to the stability and resilience of that environment.
